Review: NOMOS TETRA 27

NOMOS TETRA 27 Ref. 401

It has taken long enough, but we couldn’t be happier to finally publish our first watch article today. Of course, we could have written about one watch or another before, but we were waiting for something truly special and it was well worth the wait. So, a very warm welcome to the first review here on Gatti Grigi.

We probably wouldn’t need to mention that this is not an advertisement, but we will do so anyway. Our opinions cannot be bought and a company like NOMOS Glashütte would hardly need that in the first place.

Before we begin, make sure you are comfortable. Grab a blanket, a bowl of milk or another drink, and settle back. Because before we turn our attention to the Tetra 27 Ref. 401, we are taking a brief journey back to 1990.

Dies ließ A. Lange & Söhne glücklicherweise gerichtlich unterbinden.

NOMOS Glashütte/SA Roland Schwertner KG—simply NOMOS from now on—was founded in 1990 by Roland Schwertner. Who would have guessed? (We are open to an interview, by the way, Mr Schwertner!) Today, we would say that Mr Schwertner revived the brand.

A little knowledge for watch nerds: The original company existed until 1910 but sold Swiss watches under the designation “Glashütte/Sachsen”. Fortunately, A. Lange & Söhne successfully put a stop to this through legal action. The latest Glashütte Regulation, introduced in 2022, stipulates that at least 50 percent of the value added to a calibre must be generated in Glashütte. At NOMOS, that figure is now as high as 95 percent.

“Calibre” is another excellent keyword. Inside the Tetra 27 Ref. 401 ticks the hand-wound DUW 4001 calibre, offering a power reserve of more than 50 hours. (DUW stands for Deutsche Uhrenwerke or German Watch Movements.)

The movement measures 23.3 millimetres or 10½ lignes in diameter and has a remarkable height of just 2.6 millimetres. Sunburst decoration, a blued balance spring, stop-seconds mechanism, the NOMOS swing system, fine adjustment in six positions, thermally blued screws and hands*, rhodium-plated movement surfaces with Glashütte ribbing, NOMOS perlage, and much, much more . All of this is housed inside a square case measuring 27.5 × 27.5 millimetres.

Spoiler alert: a round calibre inside a square case? Quite fitting, really, when you think of this year’s World Cup. After all, putting the round thing into the square one is the aim of the game for many others, too. But we will come back to that later.

So why the additional 0.5 millimetres? I have no idea, they were simply included in the €1,900,00 price tag. Presumably, it was a design or production-related necessity.

*During heat bluing, also known as tempering, the steel components of a watch (usually screws or hands) are heated. This has the aesthetic benefit of giving the components a beautiful blue colour. More importantly, however, the process makes the material less brittle and more resistant to mechanical stress. The resulting oxide layer also provides a certain degree of protection against corrosion.

The small steel components are heated to approximately 290 degrees Celsius. The utmost care is required to prevent them from deforming or reaching an excessively high temperature. It is a true art of watchmaking.

The lug width measures 18 millimetres, allowing the polished, gleaming square to sit elegantly on the wrist. Naturally, it does not do so all by itself: the watch is fitted with a black strap made from genuine Horween Shell Cordovan.

For any shoe enthusiast – myself included – those words alone are enough to make the heart beat a little faster. In the world of leather, Shell Cordovan is the ultimate: like Christmas and a birthday rolled into one, as exciting as the Moon landing and as smooth as hand cream. Anyone who owns a pair of Alden loafers or Crockett & Jones cap-toes in Cordovan will surely agree: it simply does not get any better.

I would love a pair of loafers made from this almost outrageously good leather. Moreover, the strap is not a deep black; its colour is closer to dark ink blue or midnight blue. This makes it an excellent match for navy chinos or a deep-blue suit worn with a white shirt.

Now you may be asking yourselves: “What? It’s just leather.” Wrong!

Horween Shell Cordovan is not simply leather. It is the finest piece of leather from a horse’s backside. Thanks to its elaborate and time-consuming tanning process, it possesses an inimitable texture and is also extremely difficult to obtain. Prices have gone through the roof in recent years. A pair of shoes made from this leather can easily cost €1,200 or more.

Nor can you simply say, “Fine, I’ll just order some.” Only the world’s finest companies receive a slice of this very small pie and NOMOS uses it to create a fantastic watch strap.

Dear people at NOMOS, if you happen to have one of these straps left over as a factory second or from pre-production, please send me a 17-millimetre version. No buckle? I don’t care. Properly worn and beaten up, just as it should be I would be absolutely delighted. Because, folks, no bullshit: this strap gets better with every passing day, and I had only 14 days with it.

One small criticism: the images on the NOMOS website simply do not do this strap justice. Please try to showcase it better.

But back to the matter at hand: those two weeks flew by. So, let us begin at the beginning with the packaging:

NOMOS STICKER

The package from Glashütte arrived on a Saturday morning. Since the DHL tracking information had listed the following Monday as the expected delivery date, I was absolutely delighted when my wonderful wife woke me that Saturday and, while I was still half asleep, placed the package on the edge of the bed.

Normally, the beast is not fed before eleven in the morning, but I was instantly wide awake and wanted to savour this early triumph over the still-young day for a little longer. Coffee first. Yet while that stupid bean-to-cup machine was still heating up, a thousand thoughts rushed through my mind: Should I film an unboxing? Oh, no, it’s just a boring old grey box. Should I get the camera first? Oh, no, this needs to be opened immediately!

So, off to the desk. The remaining paperwork was pushed aside, the first cup of coffee hastily poured down and from that moment on, nothing mattered but this package!

Once opened, we find a gently rolled package inside, wrapped in thin paper printed with watch indices and sealed with a NOMOS sticker.

Carefully removing the wrapping reveals a small black pouch. A ribbon also holds together a current NOMOS catalogue, a notebook, a pair of black gloves and a pencil. There is no way I am sending any of that back!

I do not know who came up with this stroke of genius, but details like this completely win me over. Do you know those retro-style mechanical pencils with thick leads that extend at the push of a button, much like a ballpoint pen? I do. Except that back then, they were not retro. My father used them for his technical drawings, and as a child, I loved drawing with them at his desk.

If you unscrew the push button anticlockwise, it can be removed and used as a sharpener for the lead. Thank you for bringing back that childhood memory!

Back to the story: all that remains now is the black pouch bearing the NOMOS lettering. Neatly tied with a bow, I finally open it. Inside is a black wooden case with a silver-coloured pin used to open it.

A small envelope is hidden inside, but the watch itself remains out of sight. When the case is opened, a black cloth unfolds first, prolonging the suspense just a little longer. At this point, another huge compliment is due either to whoever packaged all of this or to myself for opening such beautiful packaging with so much flair and devotion.

And there it is, gleaming before me: the Tetra 27 Ref. 401.

It sparkles and gleams back at me. After finally removing the two transparent protective films from the front and back, it is – at least for the moment – all mine. With a touch of humility and immense gratitude, I immediately put it on and admire its dimensions.

As someone who regularly wears vintage watches from Omega, Universal Genève and Cartier, I am already accustomed to smaller proportions. The larger version, Ref. 408, measuring 29.5 × 29.5 millimetres, would probably have been too large for me. The larger models are also available with exhibition casebacks and various coloured dials. Among the latter, I would have chosen Ref. 437 with its ochre-yellow dial.

Unlike my vintage watches, however, the Tetra does not leave me worrying that a splash of water or a little rain might damage it.

Ref. 401, now sitting on my wrist, is the perfect choice for me.

The elegant strap fits comfortably around the wrist. On my 18-centimetre wrist, the square case is large enough to remain perfectly legible, yet small enough for the wrist itself to offer it a certain degree of protection. As a result, the watch is less likely to come into contact with other surfaces during everyday movements.

Measuring 27.5 × 27.5 millimetres, it sits so well that none of its corners extends beyond the wrist. This also means there is little risk of catching it on anything.

On each side, the 18-millimetre lug width is framed by a pair of wing-like lugs. They resemble four small clouds attached to the case, softening its overall appearance and preventing the watch from looking too strictly architectural.

{„tint“:-1,“temperature“:-1}

The dial is restrained, almost spartan, yet always clearly designed. The guiding principle here is unmistakable: less is more.

Sixty small markers around the outer edge ensure that the minutes are easy to read. The hours are indicated partly by Arabic numerals and partly by elongated baton markers. The off-centre small-seconds display at six o’clock sits within a 4 × 3 grid of dots, which blends effortlessly into the overall composition.

The sapphire crystal also plays its part by drawing another square around the very edge of the dial. Together, the crystal, dial and indices create the illusion of six squares nested within one another. One thing must be said quite clearly: it would have been difficult to execute this much better.

At most, the inner, slightly greyish-silver square framing the white small-seconds display could have been accentuated with a fine engraving to create an additional light-catching edge. Then again, that might simply have resulted in one square within a square too many.

In short, the dial is exceptionally easy to read, while the separation of its individual areas in white, silver and grey gives it the same nonchalant character as the rest of the watch.

With the freshly strapped-on Tetra on my wrist, I feel as though I have stepped into a film.

“Will there be anything else, Mister …?”
“Bond. James Bond. A Martini, please. Shaken, not stirred.”

It is still a little too early for a Vodka Martini, though. Nevertheless, I do feel a subtle sense of grandeur—along with the fear of putting a scratch into that beautifully shaped case. But watches are made to be worn, just like a black tuxedo. And if we do not have a suitable occasion, we simply create one.

That is exactly what I did, as we already had plans that Saturday: cake and Gin and Tonics, followed later by jazz and more cocktails.

The watch is simply a joy to wear, and over the following days, I paired it with a wide range of outfits. It works just as well with jeans and canvas sneakers as it does with a suit and tie. It complements a vintage-inspired Giorgio Armani look just as effortlessly as shorts and a T-shirt or chinos with a shirt.

With this watch, you can never be over or underdressed.

Teils, teils.

An expensive watch does not make us better people. Judging someone by their clothing is just as wrong as passing judgement on a person whose story we do not know. Nevertheless, beautiful objects can give us special moments. Appreciating the craftsmanship behind an object and taking pleasure in it is, fundamentally, something positive.

Despite all my exuberant excitement about finally being able to write a watch article, we must remain critical. It is a truly wonderful watch but does it actually live up to its promise?

Partly. What do we have here? A small stainless-steel watch with a sapphire crystal and an excellent hand-wound movement that I greatly appreciate. I enjoy winding my watches by hand in the morning. An automatic movement costs more and, in my opinion, merely adds unnecessary thickness.

Yet the excellent DUW 4001 is concealed behind a solid stainless-steel caseback. That is a shame. A small exhibition caseback would at least have offered a better view of the movement. I can already hear the outcry surrounding the shape of the calibre: yes, I also find it unfortunate to place a round movement inside a square case. However, the solid stainless-steel caseback means that it does not bother me too much – after all, it is not visible from the outside.

For a watch priced below €2,000, this is perfectly forgivable. The Lux models demonstrate that NOMOS is capable of doing things differently. Although, naturally, at a significantly higher starting price.

Was würde ich mir also wünschen?

So, what would I wish for? Well, not much. A gold case? No problem: 18-carat yellow gold is available with Ref. 418 and Ref. 419—although prices start at €9,800. Phew. At that point, there really is not much left for me to ask for.

If I were allowed to design my own Tetra 27, it would look like this: an 18-carat rose-gold case with a sapphire exhibition caseback. Hand-wound, of course. Blued hour and minute hands, complemented by a rose-gold seconds hand at six o’clock.

For contrast, I would choose blued, applied hour markers at twelve, three, six and nine o’clock. The remaining applied markers would also be made from 18-carat rose gold. Baton markers only. The entire dial would be champagne-coloured. No dots for the seconds, nothing. Just an applied, blued NOMOS logo.

Would that not be absolutely wonderful?

The entire communication with NOMOS was every bit as wonderful. My special thanks go to Christian and Liza from the PR team. Thank you so much for the trust you placed in both me and Gatti Grigi. I could not have wished for a better collaboration.

If you are reading this, consider yourselves warmly embraced. And if your boss happens to be reading along as well: the NOMOS team is doing an outstanding job when it comes to PR and social media. That is something that cannot be said often enough these days.

After all, it is by no means something to be taken for granted to send a watch worth around €2,000 to Thuringia and trust that it will be returned unharmed. With my warmest regards (and with great reluctance ) I am now parting with the Tetra 27 and sending it back.

It has been an absolute pleasure for me, our small team and the photography team involved. Thank you, thank you so very much!

But we would not be Gatti Grigi if we simply ended things here.

And since we are not yet tired of giving thanks, we would also like to express our gratitude to Residenzschloss Heidecksburg and the Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation. They opened every door to us, making a photo shoot in the heart of Rudolstadt possible.

Our special thanks go to all the museum staff who patiently put up with us, as well as to Ms Lüderitz, Director of the Thuringian State Museum Heidecksburg, and the entire organisational team.

Without all of you, this would have remained nothing more than the fanciful idea of a man who is no longer quite so young and who has made Rudolstadt his adopted home. Thank you all so very much!

Oh, and one more thing: you can find the photographs from the shoot here now, and they will also be appearing on Instagram shortly. We also seized the opportunity to arrange an analogue photo shoot. Those images are still being developed and will be published on the usual platforms soon.

But for now, enjoy the first part!

Thank you for reading.

Meow & Ciao
